Uterine Fibroids

How Can Acupuncture Help Fibroids?

Fibroids are not a new phenomenon. Women have suffered from them for thousands of years. The ancient healing art of acupuncture and oriental medicine has been successfully treating fibroids, and their accompanying pain and heavy bleeding, all without surgery. Not all women can handle or want surgery and may want to explore this option.

Using acupuncture and herbs, the bleeding and pain can be controlled. Of course, this is a much slower process than surgery, but much less invasive. A typical treatment might consist of 6 - 10 acupuncture visits and 2-4 weeks of herbs. Often the bleeding can be stopped in 1-14 days. The patient may also be encouraged to change her diet, and make certain other lifestyle changes such as environmental exposures. The acupuncture itself is a simple, relaxing, painless procedure that uses 6 - 20 micro-thin needles that are scarcely felt. They are left in place for 15-45 minutes, depending on one's condition. The needles are as thin as a human hair and produce changes in the body's hormones and chemistry. Acupuncture causes the body to release chemicals called endorphins that produce a deep sense of relaxation and encourage the body to heal. Often the patient awakes from the treatment feeling deeply refreshed and relaxed. Herbs are usually added to stop the bleeding and to help the tissues repair. The herbs also help when a woman is anemic from prolonged or heavy bleeding.
