A physical examination of the breast, whether by a clinician or by the patient--called a Self Breast Exam-- is still the #1 way that the majority of breast cancers and breast lumps are detected. Manual examination of the patient's breast by a doctor, nurse or physician's assistant is referred to as a clinical breast exam, or CBE. When CBE is performed by highly trained fingers, the best possible results are obtained.
The MammaCare technique for CBE is the result of 10 YEARS of extensive research with funding from the National Cancer Institute. The principal behind the technique is to standardize the most sensitive method for detection of the smallest lesions and earliest tissue texture changes within the breast. The method is based on the concept that if fingers can be taught to read Braille, should be possible to teach fingers to identify very small changes in breast tissue at a very early stage.
MammaCare research was conducted in two phases. First, lump detection was analyzed in laboratory tests to determine if a small lump could be detected in life-like model. What roles do lump hardness, movability, and depth play in determining those limits? Investigators systematically experimented for more than 10 years with various examination procedures. The second phase of the research was to devise a way to teach a reproducible technique to clinicians for clinical breast exams. The training is extended to patients so that they can learn how to do the most thorough monthly self breast exam.
Sandi Asazawa, physician's assistant, has been certified through the MammaCare training program. She attended a 2-day intensive training course in March, 2007 in Chicago. The clinical breast exam that you will receive examines every inch of your breast at three levels: superficial, intermediate and deep levels. The exam can take up to 12 minutes to complete.
