Neural Therapy is a treatment that utilizes the injection of a local anesthetic called procaine. Procaine is a Novocain-type product used to treat pain-based medical problems. The Huneke brothers from Germany discovered the remarkable effects of procaine on the nervous system in the 1940s. They called their discovery Neural Therapy. It is an excellent treatment for acute injuries, chronic pain, and scars.
At OsteoMed II, we have found Neural Therapy to be particularly effective for the pain that is caused from shingles. Anyone who has battled shingles will tell you that the worst part is the pain which lingers long after the rash is gone. When it is contracted, a painful skin rash that looks like blisters develops along specific nerve roots. It is caused by the varicella zoster, a virus which is related to the virus that causes chickenpox. For anyone that has had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nerves of the body. When the immune system is weakened, it loses its ability to keep the virus at bay, and shingles can erupt.
Shingles Pain
Although expected duration of shingles is only 10 to 14 days, the pain that persists after the rash has resolved can last months. The pain called “post-herpetic neuralgia” (PHN) is frequently so intense that it can simulate a heart attack or gallbladder attack. Eliminating this pain is an urgent priority to the shingles sufferer.
Neural Therapy is quickly gaining attention as a viable approach to healing. It is called neural therapy, and is a remarkably effective way to directly relieve pain caused by shingles.
How Neural Therapy Works
Neural therapy works at the level of the sympathetic nervous system by breaking up “interference fields” which bring pain to the tissues and nerve endings. Interference fields can be found anywhere on the body. They are frequently associated with scars and known trauma sites. By injecting a small amount of a medication called procaine into the tissues at the site of pain, the interference fields are broken down and healing begins.
Disrupting the interference fields gives the damaged nerves a break from the bombardment of neural stimuli causing pain. The blood supply to the painful cells is improved and cellular waste is removed. The associated muscle spasm is relieved and the problem is gradually resolved. In addition to help for PHN, neural therapy has been shown to be a highly effective method for treating chronic pain conditions, including TMJ, ankle sprains, migrain headaches and chronic low back pain.
Administering Neural Therapy
Neural thrapy is administered via a series of small injections at the trauma site. A small amount of Procaine is injected into the tissue creating a small bump (called a blep) in the skin. Procaine, which is similar to Novocaine, is used because it also has many healing properties, especially for damaged nerves. Approximately 15 to 30 tiny injections are injected that feel like small mosquito bites or bee stings.
Treatments are generally repeated weekly until pain is completely eliminated. Although relief is usually gradual, many patients have reported instantaneous relief referred to as the “lightning reaction” of neural therapy.
